January Hooker

Local artist January Hooker has painted on the Coast for forty years.  For decades she has displayed her paintings in galleries, shows and special exhibits in the Bay Area and won many awards. In 1989 the City of San Francisco purchased a Surrealistic painting from one of these exhibits for their permanent art collection. Locally and beyond people are familiar with her work.

The style of January’s work combines Realism with the glowing light and distinct shadows characteristic of Impressionism.  Applying acrylic paints in a self-taught method of thin, layered hues, (similar to the centuries old methods of egg tempera) she creates a depth to each color.  The rich colors combine with the contrasts in light and shadow to make her paintings of gardens, landscapes, or old-world architectural sights seem to come alive.  The viewer is drawn into her paintings by the carefully planned perspective, and the light depicting a certain time of day.

The Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival commemorative art print was started by January in 1987.  For twenty-one years, she painted the original images and produced the prints, depicting different beautiful and inspirational Coastal scenes.

January’s two largest paintings are the garden murals in the courtyard of La Piazza at 604 Main Street in Half Moon Bay.

Her original paintings may be seen by appointment at her studio/home.  For any information, call 650-867-3149, or contact her at januarysart@gmail.com
